Lives and works in Rotterdam/ Dordrecht (NL)

Bea de Visser is one of Netherlands most notable experimental film director, visual artist and tutor. She works worldwide and is the winner of numerous international awards.

BEA DE VISSER studies monumental design and painting at the academies for Plastic Arts in Breda and Rotterdam. She leaves the academy to continue her education by studying electro-acoustic sound. She starts her career as a performance artist on the stages of trendy clubs and alternative art spaces with sound works, live installations and noise performances. In the early 80ies, with two friends of the ’Ultra’ scene, she forms the very temporary music collective Valori Plastici. She returns to painting and for two years is associated with the ’Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten’ in Amsterdam (1993-1995). As from then, film is her medium. The work she has been developing ever since is shown worldwide in museums and art spaces, theatres, the public space and especially the cinema.

Bea de Visser’s present activities include personal coaching of students in several disciplines like film, dramaturgy, theatrical design, autonomous audio-visual design and autonomous plastic arts at universities and academies in the Netherlands and abroad.

In 2003 Bea de Visser establishes the independent production studio Anotherfilm in Rotterdam. Initially the studio, with its negative scanner and equipment for online and digital image editing, is her head room for scenario and film development, and serves as a tool for pre- and post-production of all her film projects. At the end of 2005 Bea de Visser starts working as a producer for other filmmakers, while Anotherfilm (with cooperation of Hans Eijses) expands into a production company, focused on those filmmakers who keep the wide field of cinema adventurous. Anotherfilm, as a co-producer, intends to actively cooperate and link up with the realisation and funding of independent quality films, film installations and short films on national and international scale. Recently i.e. the feature film ‘The Muse’ by Ben van Lieshout (NL) and the international co-production with the national Theatre Luxembourg (LU). [www.anotherfilm.org]

Bea de Visser made films for i.e. Dance Group Krizstina de Chatel (NL), the Diaghilev Festival Gronings Museum and Grand Theatre Groningen (NL), Dance Group Jean Guillaume Weis (LU), Pleinmuseum (NL), jazz ensemble I Compani and the band Bazooka (NL)

DVD releases i.e. with Homescreen, The Netherlands Media Art Institute, The International Film Festival Rotterdam/ monthly Screen, and ‘Highlights’ by the Dutch Film Fund.

As coach and tutor Bea de Visser is (has been) attached to i.e. the HKU, Academy for Visual Arts Utrecht, faculty theatre, Utrecht (NL), the Frank Mohr Institute, post graduate course of studies Theatre Design, Groningen (NL), Hoge school van Amsterdam, faculty Theatre / Theatre Design, Amsterdam (NL), Merz Akademie, faculty New Media, Stuttgart (D), University for Film, Television and Theatre, faculty Drama, Bratislava (SK), Minerva Academy for Visual Arts, film/ video department, Groningen (NL).

Bea de Visser has advised for diverse committees, advisory boards and juries, i.e. of the Fonds BKVB, Visual Arts, design and Architecture, Amsterdam (NL), International Film Festival Bratislava (SK), International Festival of New Media and New Film, Split (Croatia), State-authorized member of the exam board for "Independent Art", Minerva Academy of Visual Arts, Groningen, NL, Netherlands Institute of Media Art, Amsterdam (NL), Centraal Museum, Utrecht (NL).
